Nurture a Seedling

Urgent Need

The deep emotional wounds and trauma carried by foster children require specialized therapeutic support that state funding rarely covers. Your gift makes this life-changing therapy accessible.

Seedling Root to Bloom provides essential, trauma-informed therapy and support programs that ensure foster children and their families can heal together and thrive.

We know from the data of the Adverse Childhood Events Study (ACEs) that children are more likely to present with developmental differences when exposed to a variety of factors. These include: abuse, neglect, household substance abuse or mental illness, exposure to substances in utero, premature birth, and poor opportunities, low-income households, for attachment with primary caregivers due to the continuous home disruptions within the foster system.

Direct treatment therapy and home programs are hard for families to follow through on alone. The work is often overwhelming, not nuanced to the issues they are seeing, and time consuming in an already busy world.

Half of foster placement homes close within the first year due to stress and fatigue due to secondary trauma, endless meetings, appointments, misinformation, paperwork, and court hearings. They need support to provide what the child requires.

Not all the care that Seedling Root to Bloom would like to provide would be reimbursable:

  • Some children have no health insurance coverage. (unable to renew, loss due to income above the poverty line, but not enough income to afford the marketplace)
  • Some children in foster care are in an ICPC (Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children) and have only the original state's Medicaid and not the state they now reside in.
  • Medicaid will not reimburse for support services, such as attending IEP meetings, teaching Court Letter writing, providing diagnostic education, and other services we hope to provide for families.
  • Medicaid would not reimburse services provided to the caregiver without the child present.
  • Additionally Medicaid may only pay for one therapy evaluation, we want that evaluation to be done by those therapists providing direct access care (Children’s Mercy Hospital, Seedling Pediatric Therapies, etc.)

Help us nurture the seeds of healing and build strong, stable roots for children in foster care.
